Scenario 1: Existing Deployment Expansion

The expansion scenarios were created to serve as a general guide for expansion in the six-year period. It is not anticipated that any one of these draft expansion scenarios would be selected and adopted strictly as described. Elements of all of the scenarios may be present in the final expansion plan. Eventually, the County plans to expand the Capital Bikeshare network throughout Arlington, while adhering to the expansion principles.

Add density to current corridors followed by a gradual expansion into adjacent neighborhoods with high station density.

First add all of the remaining stations that can feasibly be added to the Rosslyn-Ballston and Jefferson Davis corridors, and expand the number of docks at existing stations as needed. After these stations have been added, start generally expanding out from the existing corridors into adjacent neighborhoods, but do so in a gradual and dense manner. There would be no connection of the two corridors, or to North and South Arlington, in the near term. In this scenario bikeshare would serve as a complement to existing transit, providing additional connectivity to Metro corridors for the neighborhoods 3-4 blocks from the corridor, and then to those neighborhoods beyond walking distance.

Scenario 1 Pros

  • Lower operating costs/less rebalancing
  • Provides high quality Bikeshare to the majority of the population
  • Easier for users to find a station or empty dock

Scenario 1 Cons

  • Poor geographic coverage with a lack of demographic diversity
  • Placing more stations in areas where they already exist

  1. Lack of demographic diversity, and lack of destination diversity.

Does not open the system to (m)any new users, duplicates the transit routes, does little to connect users in S Arl to N Arl and vice versa, does little to connect any new users to transit.

    • Shortsighted

The reason that I joined CaBi as a resident in Ballston is the ability for me to get to places not only all over the district but all over Arlington as well. This plan cuts off Shirlington completely and leads me to believe its the worst of three options
